The challenge
Hurricane Helene devastated the East TN and Western NC mountains, including apocalyptic damage to our nation’s busiest highway—Interstate 40—at a critical pass through the Appalachian Mountains. Due to the damage, traffic along a major east/west shipping route had to be redirected hundreds of miles to the north and south for many months. Reopening this major highway as quickly as possible became a federal priority.
project goals
Numerous businesses have been playing key roles in the reconstruction of a 15+ mile section of I-40 that has completely washed away. Steel Plate Fabricators has had the honor of providing important steel structures that are being used to repair and retain the new highway. An innovative dam structure is being constructed along the bank of the Pigeon River should prevent something like this from ever happening again. The steel structures built by SPF will eventually be immortalized as they become permanently cast into the dam superstructure.
